The Investing in Ontario Act grant announced Monday is new money for the town.
New Tecumseth Mayor Mike MacEachern didn't choose a specific project for the money to be used for. He said there are a number of priority road projects in the town, as well as ongoing upgrades to the wastewater systems and recreation centres to consider.
MacEachern said council is going to work with town staff to decide where the money will be most useful.
Premier Dalton McGuinty announced the $1.1 billion Investing in Ontario Act grants at the Association of Ontario Municipalities (AMO) conference. It is money the government is reinvesting from last year's surplus.
In total, municipalities in the Simcoe County area are receiving $39.5 million, which McGuinty hopes will stimulate the economy and improve the quality of services.
Distributed based on population, the one-time grants also sees Essa receiving $1.2 million and Adjala-Tosorontio getting $792,414. Simcoe County will be allocated $5.5 million.
Adjala-Tosorontio Mayor Tom Walsh hopes to put the grant towards improving the roads. He said the item won't be discussed at a council meeting until next week, which is already September and not prime time to start roads projects. As such, Walsh said the funding will be used in budget discussions for 2009 projects.
